The government has decided on a regulation that means that biogas producers can receive support if the biogas is upgraded to the same quality as natural gas. In the long term, this could reduce dependence on imports of fossil natural gas, as biogas could then replace natural gas in industries or be used as a fuel in gas-powered cars, heavy trucks and maritime transport.
- The current situation demonstrates the need for an accelerated energy transition and phase-out of fossil fuels, both to reduce the need to import fossil fuels from Russia and for the sake of the climate. Increased biogas production plays an important role in achieving this," said Khashayar Farmanbar, Minister of Energy and Digitalization.
In the budget bill for 2022, SEK 500 million was allocated with the aim of increasing biogas production and strengthening the competitiveness of producers. In 2023 and 2024, it is proposed that SEK 700 million per year be allocated for the same purpose. The initiative is proposed to continue until 2040, with a checkpoint in 2024.
The government has now decided on a regulation for how the support for biogas should look like. The production of biogas that is upgraded to the same quality as natural gas will receive a maximum subsidy of 30 öre per kilowatt hour. Such biogas can be used, for example, in gas-powered cars or to replace natural gas in industries. Biogas that is converted into liquid form can receive an additional 15 öre per kilowatt hour in support. Liquefied biogas is used, for example, in heavy trucks and shipping. The Swedish Energy Agency will be responsible for the support.

How much support does it mean? Biogas at the vehicle gas station has an energy content of about 13 KWh/kg. That is, the support for compressed vehicle gas should be able to pay almost SEK 4 per kg and thus be able to reduce the price significantly from today's biogas station prices for pure biogas between SEK 19-23 / kg. The equivalent for LBG would then be almost SEK 6 per kg of liquid biogas.
